Studio Junio Edits is home to the artwork & storytelling of artist Janelle Junio.


Based in Los Angeles, CA, mixed media artist Janelle Junio rediscovered her love for collage art in 2020 while in quarantine. Along with writing, she discovered that creating paper and digital collages was the best way for her to process the watershed year that called for sincere healing and deep reflection around the world.

 

The act of piecing together broken images and transforming them into something entirely new became a kind of healing alchemy that Janelle called a "Junio Edit." Editing makes detailed changes that can positively transform what's already there and after that year, Janelle felt that the best way for her to live her most meaningful life was to make tiny edits to her reality wherever necessary. The art of collage became an ideal practice for embodying this newfound life philosophy. The surrealist nature of the art form aligned well with her maximalist aesthetic, and her revival of this old passion quickly turned her beloved apartment into a proper artist's studio.

 

Studio Junio Edits is a home within a home, a safe space for Janelle's creations to live and grow. Without Janelle's friendships and community, SJE wouldn't exist, as nearly all the clippings used in her analog collage art come from her dear friends and family who thoughtfully save their magazines and catalogues with the purpose of providing material for her next creation. For this, she is forever grateful.

 

As a former professional dancer, Janelle understands that there are some parts of life that can't be expressed by words alone. Through collage art, she shares her unique stories and how their significances are ultimately universal. Some themes explored in her work include: human connection, self-discovery, home life, childhood & nostalgia, nature, and the beauty & complexity of her Filipina American identity.
